Season 7 Recap

Another season of George Jetsons softball is in the books! This one was a painful one as the George Jetsons posted their worst record ever, finishing at 1-11 in the regular season. Fortunately, the season ended quickly because we had no rainouts (an unprecedented feat in our short history), so we played 12 games in 6 weeks.

Let’s skip the regular season (in which the George Jetsons were outscored 182-99, and move on to the playoffs. The George Jetsons saved some face in the playoff tournament last Wednesday, advancing to the second round after defeating Patchy Ground Fog, and giving the Baby Brains a run for their money! The Patchy Ground Fog game started out as a tough battle. PGF got out to a 4-0 lead before GJ came back to tie the game in the third inning. Then, it was 6-6 heading into the sixth inning before the GJ offense exploded for 11 runs in the top of the sixth. The George Jetsons won the game 17-7, earning a second-round match against the Baby Brains.

For the Baby Brains game, the George Jetsons debuted their new 3-2-3 defense, ingeniously conceived by Defensive Coordinator McCann. The BB batters were baffled by the defense as GJ held them to 4 runs over 6 innings. GJ scored 3 runs over those 6 innings against the outstanding BB defense, setting up the seventh and final inning. In the top of the seventh, Abbey tripled and McCann drove him home, tying the game at 4-4. In the suspenseful bottom of the seventh, BB managed two base runners with two outs. The final batter then hit a 3-run walk-off homerun over the center field fence to give BB a 7-4 victory.

The George Jetsons players seemed happy with their performance in the playoffs. We played our best and made the best team in the league sweat a little bit. Hopefully, we’ll carry that momentum into the next season. Season 8 begins on May 13 (the George Jetsons will play on Tuesday nights this season).

[b]MOST VALUABLE JETSON AWARD[/b]

Despite our poor team play, we did have some great individual performances this season. The Most Valuable Jetsons (MVJ) Award is presented for the most exceptional performance each season. If you take a look at the individual stats below, you’ll see that the obvious candidates for the Season 7 MVJ Award are Jason Abbey, Randy Lillard, Chip McCann, and George Nelson.

Lillard had another solid season, even if he might not having been happy with dropping to a team-leading .706 batting average and only 1 homerun. McCann hit the ball hard all season long, but was robbed of many hits by great defensive plays. He still earned more single-game MVJ Awards (3) than any other player. Nelson had a breakout season, hitting .618, slugging over 1.000, and leading the team in RBIs.

But, the MVJ Award for Season 7 goes to Jason Abbey! Playing in his first full season as a George Jetson, Abbey tore it up, posting a team-leading Sostaric Index of 24.25. His MVJ Award reads as follows:
