Season 1 Recap

Postby eljefe on Mon Jul 30, 2001 12:00 pm

The expansion George Jetsons completed their inaugural season last week. Despite our 2-6 record, I would declare this first season a success. We played well as a team, especially in the last half of the season, where we won 2 games and lost 2 close games against eventual playoff teams. Most importantly, we had fun, even when we lost. Congratulations on a great first season! I’m sure we’ll continue to improve in future seasons.

I’d like to use our weekly game time this Wednesday to treat you all to a round of drinks at Sherlock’s! Consider it “Game 9,” with a late start time of 9pm. I’ll also present the Season Most Valuable Jetson Award at this gathering, so I hope most or all of you can make it.

SCHEDULE RESULTS

Being an expansion team with players that had never played together before, we started out a bit slow. We lost to our rival Rastros (the team that inspired our name) and then got spanked by Team Hotel Bravo. We were unable to hold a sizable lead against Space Cowboys and then suffered our worst loss of the season by getting shutout against Smack Down. Several rainouts in a row gave us time to regroup before facing the lowly co-ops, who gave us our first victory. Then, proving that beating the co-ops was not a fluke, we played the eventual 4th-place Baseline Bandits to a 2-run loss, and played the eventual 2nd-place Base Cadets to a 4-run loss. Remember, this was the team that tied the team that beat us 16-0! We had come a long way! Finally, we finished the season on a high note with a 12-8 win over L.O.C.

FINAL STANDINGS
Here are the final standings. The top four teams (Smack Down, Base Cadets, Team Hotel Bravo, and Baseline Bandits) will battle it out in the playoffs. The George Jetsons finished in 8th place. Although they finished with the same record as us, the Space Cowboys were awarded sole possession of 7th place due to the fact that the beat us in head-to-head play. Predictibally, the Co-ops finished in last place with no wins.

SEASON MVJ AWARD
The Softball Writers’ Association of America will select the Most Valuable Jetson (MVJ) of the season this week. The award will be based on both offensive performance, defensive performance, and team spirit/leadership. The SWAA welcomes your comments on who should receive the Season MVJ.

COMING UP

Six of the 12 original George Jetsons will form the core of the team for the second season. So far, 3 more new recruits have been added to the second season roster, and 2 or 3 more recruits will be added by the time the season comes around. So far, this is our second season roster:

Mark Dub
Grahame Everist
Quincy Harp
Jeremy Hart
DJ Kroeger
Edgar Medina
Jason Niebuhr
Curt Peternell
Tim Rupp

For those of you leaving the team, it hurts to lose you since we had improved so much by the end of the season. You should know that if you become available again in future seasons, you will always be welcome back on the George Jetsons.
