George Jetsons players, former players, and fans,
Your George Jetsons recently completed their twelfth season of playing softball. Despite losing superstud Randy Lillard to Purdue, the team felt confident heading into Season 12. For one thing, Uncle Normy was returning to the team full-time. Also, the team was riding a streak of 4 straight seasons earning a playoff spot. During those 4 seasons, the Jetsons posted a regular-season record of 31-16-1. So they had every reason to feel confident!
It started out well enough with a 14-7 against Avionics, a team that would turn out to be one of the worst in the league. But, the Jetsons proceeded to lose to the Rebels to finish with a split in Week 1. The next week, we lost 10-2 against Clutch Hitters; but even more frustrating than that was the 8-6 loss against Bohica, a bad team that we have usually beaten handily in the past. Week 3 pitted us against Tappa Kegga Brew, a team that’s always good for padding your offensive stats. The Jetsons exploded for 26 runs against TKB, and we hoped that it would be a good warmup for facing the Rastros. The Rastros, who were playing the season without their EG core, recruited several ringers and fielded a strong team. The Jetsons had an uncharacteristically strong showing against the Rastros (we usually choke against them), but still the Rastros outplayed us and took the game 10-5, leaving the Jetsons in a 2-4 hole almost halfway through the season.
Week 4 started with a tough loss against Clutch Hitters. This time, the George Jetsons almost came back and tied the game in the final inning, but fell one run short in losing 11-10. We made the world right again by thumping Bohica 13-1 and then shutout TKB 15-0 the following week. That set up another showdown against the Rastros. The game was similar to the first matchup, with the Jetsons playing tough, but falling short by a score of 10-6.
Even at 4-6 with 4 games to play, the George Jetsons were not completely out of the playoff picture. Taino’s Revenge was just one game better and we were scheduled to play them in 2 of the next 3 games. Unfortunately, Taino held the Jetsons to just 4 runs in each game, eliminating the Jetsons from contention even before factoring in a 9-2 loss to the Rebels. The Jetsons finished on a high note, beating the sorry Avionics team 15-3. The final record for the season was 5-9, tied for 5th place with Bohica, and out of the playoffs for the first time since Pete went back to the Top Four method 4 seasons ago. The Faux Rastros proceeded to win the Men’s DD championship for the first time ever. I wonder if they’ll let the EG players back on the team now?...
So, it was a down season for the George Jetsons, but we had a lot of fun and we’re looking forward to returning to our usual playoff form in 2005! Until then, thanks to the players for playing, and thanks to the fans for your support.
