George Jetsons players, former players, and fans,
Your George Jetsons softball club recently completed the Spring 2005 softball season, their 13th season of play. After a long offseason over the winter, the Jetsons players were looking forward to rectifying their 5-9 record from Season 12. The Tuesday night league included only 5 teams this time, so making the playoffs by finishing in the top 4 seemed like a matter of simply not sucking.
We kicked off the season way back in February with an easy win over the Smashers. The Smashers were retooled and supposedly improved, but they put up little fight against the mighty Jetsons, who won 19-13. The victory put to rest any talk of a Jetsons-Smashers rivalry, which had started brewing after the Smashers beat us for the first time at the end of Season 12.
After a couple of rainouts, we finally got to play again in mid-March. In the first game of a doubleheader, we played against the Rebels, who came out hitting hard. The Jetsons and the Rebels battled each other to a 13-13 tie at the end of 6 innings of regulation play. In the top of the extra inning, the Rebels scored 4 runs, but with some outstanding clutch hitting the Jetsons overcame the deficit to win 18-17. It was a quality win--some thought it ranked among the best games in Jetsons history. Unfortunately, we followed it up with a stinker against the Assassyns, who beat us 10-2 in the nightcap.
We got our chance to rematch the Assassyns the following week, but still fell short as the Assassyns won 17-16. Then, we finally turned things around with a 9-7 over a new team called Whatever, Whenever. Perhaps we should have cherished this win more at the time, because WW would quickly become our nemesis.
We rematched WW the following week and they run-ruled us 15-3 in 4 innings. Unhappy with our performance, we took out our frustration on the Smashers by beating them 15-3 twice in a row! The second of those victories was the first game of a tripleheader that we played on April 12th. The last 2 games of the night were both against the Rebels. We won the first game 11-4, and we were on our way to completing the 3-game sweep (of the night as well as of the Rebels), but the Rebels came back and beat us 9-8.
We ended the season by facing WW again, and once again they whooped us, this time by a score of 17-10. So, we finished the regular season 6-5 in our 5-team league. The Assassyns beat us both times we played them. We lost 2 out of 3 to Whatever, Whenever. We beat the Rebels 2 out of 3 times and should have swept them. And, we did sweep the Smashers.
Our 6-5 record was good enough for third place in the league and good enough to make the playoffs. The playoffs featured 12 teams, 4 each from the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday night leagues. The Monday night league had just 4 teams in it, which meant that even the winless (0-10) Tappa Kegga Brew managed to make the playoffs. And, we were lucky enough to be matched up against them! We beat TKB 16-5 in the first round of the playoffs, earning a shot at one of the top seeds, the Base Cadets, who finished 10-2 in their league. This was an outstanding game as both teams battled hard to make it to the third round of the playoffs. The Base Cadets had taken an 8-5 lead after 3 innings, but then the George Jetsons exploded for 9 runs in the top of the fourth. We held off BC for a 14-9 victory and advanced to the third round! Like the extra-inning victory over the Rebels early in the season, this game quickly earned status as a candidate for best game in GJ history.
The playoffs were set to conclude the following week with only 4 teams left standing. The George Jetsons entered the Final Four needing only to beat Whatever, Whenever to advance to the championship game. WW, of course, had been a thorn in our collective sides for much of the season, but here was our chance at redemption! Well, we didn’t make much of it. WW cruised to a 21-6 victory and went on to win the Men’s DD Championship.
The George Jetsons returned to their usual playoff form this season, but getting so close to the championship has made this team hungry. We’re looking forward to improving even more in Season 14 and advancing further into the playoffs! Thanks to all the players for playing, and to all the fans for your support.
